Can staff just use their phones?
For some events, yes. Phones are good now, and a staff meeting or a small lunch doesn’t need more than that.
The question is what happens to the photos after. If they’re for the group chat, phones are fine. If they’re for the website, the annual report or a sponsor, that’s where it changes.
Where do phone photos fall short?
- Dark rooms. Ballrooms and evening receptions are where phones struggle most, and that’s where most events happen.
- The stage. From the back of the room, the speaker is a small, soft shape.
- The person holding the phone. They’re working the event too. When registration backs up, the photos stop.
- Nobody owns the list. The award winner, the sponsor, the board together. Those get missed when nobody’s job is to get them.
When are phones fine?
Small, informal and internal. A team lunch, a quick celebration, a behind-the-scenes post. Phones are also great for the same-day story while it’s happening. That’s a good job for staff even when a photographer is there.
What does a photographer get you?
Someone whose only job is the pictures, who knows where to be before the moment happens. Your team gets to run the event instead of chasing it.
I’m based in Northern Virginia and I’ve photographed in Tysons, Reston and Herndon. More of my company work is on Corporate Events, and a small evening program is on An evening panel.
