Photo booth or a roaming photographer?

What’s the difference?

A photo booth takes the pictures people pose for. A photographer takes the ones they don’t know are happening.

Both are fun. They just make different things.

When is a photo booth enough?

When the photos are for the guests and nobody else. A booth is a party favor. People line up with friends, grab the props and take home a strip. If that’s the whole goal, a booth does it well.

What does a roaming photographer get that a booth can’t?

The night itself. The toast, the award, the speaker, the room when it’s full. Two old colleagues running into each other.

That’s what you need if anyone’s using the photos after: the recap email, the website, next year’s sponsor deck. A booth gets the people who walked up to it. A photographer gets the people who matter to the program, whether they’d ever stand in a booth or not.

Can we have both?

Sure. They don’t compete. The booth keeps guests busy, and people hamming it up in line make a good picture too.

I’m based in Northern Virginia and photograph evenings across DC, Arlington and Alexandria. More of my evening work is on Galas.
