How do you choose an event photographer?
Start with the work, not the price. Three simple things tell you most of what you need to know.
Does the style match your brand?
Look at the photographer’s website. If the style generally matches what your brand is looking for, that’s already a good sign. Photography is a lot of small choices, and you want someone whose choices look like yours.
Can you see a recent event from start to finish?
Ask for an example from the past year. Most photographers have other work they don’t show publicly, and seeing it gives you a more accurate picture of what they do.
Ask for the full album, not just the top ten photos. A full album shows you what a whole day looks like, including the ordinary moments between the highlights.
What should you judge it on?
The outcome, not the line items. The people I work best with are looking for someone reliable and capable who can handle a lot inside of chaos. That’s what a good event photographer is really selling.
When am I not the right fit?
Usually when the decision comes down to the number, the lowest cost. I’d rather tell you that up front than start the day with different expectations. If what you want is a steady hand that handles the unexpected, we’ll get along.
What to send me
The date, the venue and the program, and I’ll tell you honestly whether I’m a fit. Before you decide, these help: questions to ask any event photographer, whether you need a second photographer, and what event photography costs.
