Do you need a second photographer?

Do you need a second photographer?

It depends on what the event is for. I used to bring a second photographer to most events. Over time I found that it was sometimes overkill, so now I decide based on how the day actually runs.

When would you say yes?

When more than one important thing is happening at the same time. If your event has several main stages running at once, a second photographer means every one of them gets covered. Without one, something goes uncovered, and you want to decide in advance which thing that is.

When is one photographer plenty?

When there’s one main stage at a time. A lot of events work this way, and for those a second photographer would be overkill: you’d be paying for another person to shoot the same moments from another angle.

How do I decide?

Ask yourself one question: is there ever a moment when two things you care about are happening in different places? If so, say yes. If the day moves as one program, one photographer can cover it, and I’ll move around the room.

If you’re not sure, send me the schedule. I’ll tell you honestly whether it needs two, even when the answer is no. For what a second photographer costs, see what event photography costs.

Where I work

I’m based in Northern Virginia and most of my work is around DC, so inside the DC metro there’s no travel line on your budget.
