Planning an event in Annapolis?

Maryland’s capital packs the State House, the U.S. Naval Academy and a working harbor into a few walkable blocks of brick streets. Business events here lean historic and waterfront, from colonial inns on State Circle to hotel ballrooms a short walk from the docks.

Which venues should you look at?

Annapolis Waterfront Hotel, Autograph Collection

A hotel on the Annapolis harbor at 80 Compromise Street, a short walk from the Naval Academy. Rooms and dining look out over Spa Creek, Ego Alley and the Chesapeake Bay, and the hotel hosts company events, sales meetings and retreats.

For photos: big harbor windows and docks outside give plenty of water and boat backdrops, best around sunset.

Graduate by Hilton Annapolis

The former Loews Annapolis on West Street, a few blocks from Church Circle, now a Graduate hotel. Part of its meeting space sits in the Powerhouse, a restored turn-of-the-century building that once powered the city, alongside the Regatta Ballroom in the main hotel.

For photos: the Powerhouse rooms mix old brick and natural light, which suits candid meeting coverage.

The Westin Annapolis

A 225-room hotel in the Park Place development at the top of West Street, a short walk from the State House and the waterfront. Its Capitol Ballroom is one of the larger hotel ballrooms in town, which makes it a regular choice for association meetings and galas.

For photos: a modern ballroom with a clean, neutral look that works well for stage and award moments.

Historic Inns of Annapolis

Three 18th-century buildings, the Governor Calvert House, the Maryland Inn and the Robert Johnson House, that have lodged statesmen and visitors for well over two centuries. The Governor Calvert House faces the Maryland State House on State Circle and holds the inns’ meeting and banquet rooms, plus colonial gardens and a terrace.

For photos: period rooms and State Circle outside give events a strong sense of place.

William Paca House and Garden

A five-part Georgian mansion built for William Paca, one of Maryland’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence and later its governor. A National Historic Landmark run by Historic Annapolis, it rents the garden and a tented terrace for receptions, corporate gatherings and military dinners.

For photos: the terraced garden, summerhouse and Chippendale-style bridge make a classic outdoor reception setting.

Annapolis Maritime Museum and Park

A museum telling the story of Annapolis’s maritime life, with a waterfront museum on Second Street in Eastport and a 12-acre park campus. It hosts corporate offsites and social events, and runs public cruises aboard the historic skipjack Wilma Lee.

For photos: open water, docks and working boats make relaxed, outdoor-feeling event frames.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Philip Merrill Environmental Center

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s headquarters on the bay, which opened in 2001 as the first building to earn LEED Platinum from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is a popular venue for corporate retreats and events, with the bay right outside.

For photos: wood, glass and wide bay views suit mission-driven groups that want the setting in the picture.

Home of Navy football, the stadium rents far more than game-day seats: an 8,500 square foot banquet hall known as the N Room, the Navy Lacrosse Hall of Fame, box-level reception rooms, the clubs at Akerson Tower and tented spaces on the field. It also hosts big community events such as the Annapolis Crab Feast.

For photos: the clubs look over the field, and the tented areas give room for large, busy event scenes.

How do you plan the photos?

Picked the room? Next comes the plan. What event photography costs has the rates, and the event shot list helps you decide what matters most. For an association, see annual meeting photography; for a company, corporate event photography. Evening events have their own page for gala photography. If you’re bringing a team from DC, how to book an event photographer walks through the steps.
