What are the options?
Loudoun has more kinds of room than most people expect. Big resorts, a conference center built for training, wineries, breweries and old estates that rent out a house or a lawn.
This isn’t a list of places I’ve worked. It’s what’s here, sorted by type, with what I’d tell you about the pictures.
Which venues suit a conference?
If you’ve got a full program and a few hundred people, start with the two built for it. Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg has a conference center on site. The National Conference Center, also near Leesburg, is a training and conference campus on wooded grounds.
Rooms like these are made for presenting, so the stage is usually fine. The thing to ask about is the house lights. A ballroom that goes dark for the slides makes the audience disappear, and the audience is half the picture.
What about a winery or an estate?
For a smaller group, an off-site or a dinner, this is where Loudoun is at its best.
- Wineries like Stone Tower in Leesburg and Breaux in Purcellville host groups in barns and pavilions.
- Oatlands in Leesburg rents out rooms in the historic house for day-long work retreats, plus a tent on the grounds.
- Morven Park in Leesburg lists corporate events and meetings on its estate.
- Salamander in Middleburg is the resort option out in horse country.
These photograph beautifully in daylight and get harder after dark. Plan anything you need pictures of, like the group photo or the talk on the lawn, while the sun’s still up.
How does each kind of room photograph?
- Big windows: the best case. Daylight does most of the work.
- Ballrooms: fine on stage, dark everywhere else. Ask the venue to keep some light on the room.
- Barns and pavilions: warm and good-looking, with mixed light that I’ll work around.
- Lawns and terraces: great until midday sun, then everyone’s squinting. Early or late is better.
If you’re touring a place, take a picture of the room on your phone at the time of day your event runs. That’s a rough preview of what you’ll get.
I’m based in Northern Virginia and I’ve photographed in Leesburg, Ashburn and Middleburg. Just past the county line, a restored bank in Winchester is a good example of an old building doing new work: The Exchange. More of my company work is on Corporate Events, and there’s more on the county on Loudoun County.
