Planning an event in Alexandria?
Old Town Alexandria is a riverfront port town with brick sidewalks and 18th-century buildings, and many of those buildings now host dinners and receptions. Add the Masonic Memorial on its hill, Mount Vernon down the parkway, and a handful of conference hotels, and it covers everything from a board retreat to a 1,000-person meeting.
Which venues should you look at?
George Washington Masonic National Memorial
A nine-story neoclassical memorial built in the 1920s on a hill above Old Town, maintained by the Freemasons in honor of George Washington. Its halls, 400-seat theater, portico and observation deck are all available for events, and it appeared in National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
For photos: grand columns and marble halls read well in wides; the portico and observation deck give views down King Street.
Torpedo Factory Art Center
A former Navy torpedo factory on the Potomac waterfront that now holds artist studios and galleries. In the evening, when it closes to visitors, the Main Hall and other spaces rent for receptions of up to about 700 standing guests.
For photos: industrial bones, art on the walls and a waterfront setting give lots of texture.
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum
Two linked buildings, a tavern from about 1785 and the 1792 City Tavern and Hotel, that were the center of Alexandria’s social life. George and Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Lafayette all passed through, and the historic rooms, including the ballroom, can be rented.
For photos: period rooms with candlelit character; small spaces favor intimate dinners and detail frames.
George Washington’s Mount Vernon
Washington’s own estate on the Potomac, a short drive south of Old Town. Organizations can co-host evening events on the estate, and the Mount Vernon Inn and the Smith Auditorium handle corporate meetings and dinners.
For photos: colonial architecture and river views are hard to beat; evening light on the grounds is a highlight.
Hilton Alexandria Mark Center
Alexandria’s largest conference hotel, off Seminary Road in the West End. Its Plaza Ballroom is roughly 10,000 square feet, part of about 37,000 square feet of meeting space, which makes it a common choice for government and association conferences.
For photos: large ballroom and many breakouts; standard hotel lighting, so plan flash for stage and awards.
The Westin Alexandria Old Town
A meeting hotel in the Carlyle district with more than 20,000 square feet of space and a shuttle to the King Street Metro. Its Edison Ballroom holds up to 700 guests, which Visit Alexandria notes as among the largest in Old Town.
For photos: chandeliers and column lights in the Edison Ballroom add warmth to gala and dinner coverage.
Archer Hotel Old Town Alexandria
A boutique hotel on King Street that took over the former Lorien Hotel & Spa in July 2024. It focuses on smaller meetings and dinners, and it has the only hotel spa in Old Town.
For photos: boutique rooms suit small leadership meetings and detail-rich dinners.
Hotel Heron
A hotel that opened in 2024 partly inside the 1926 George Mason Hotel building on Prince Street. It offers the Heritage Ballroom for about 150 and the seasonal Good Fortune rooftop, Alexandria’s only hotel rooftop bar, for up to 200 at cocktail events.
For photos: colonial revival ballroom details plus a rooftop with river views give two very different looks in one venue.
Kimpton Hotel Monaco Alexandria
A Kimpton boutique hotel on King Street in Old Town, a few blocks from the waterfront. It hosts smaller meetings, receptions and company gatherings with Old Town’s shops and restaurants right outside.
For photos: boutique hotel rooms and nearby brick streets work well for relaxed group photos between sessions.
How do you plan the photos?
Once the venue’s set, the rest gets easier. Event photography pricing lays out the rates, how many hours you need helps size the day, and the event photography shot list covers what to capture. Planning a multi-day program? Here’s how I work as a conference photographer. For a company gathering, corporate event photography shows the work. If the whole team is in one place, it’s a good day for corporate portraits. For more across Northern Virginia, see DC-area venues that photograph well and team building in Northern Virginia.
