Planning an event in Charlottesville?

Charlottesville pairs the University of Virginia and Jefferson’s Monticello with Blue Ridge wine country, which makes it a natural pick for leadership retreats, board meetings and alumni galas. Venues run from a historic downtown theater and a hotel on UVA’s Darden grounds to country estates and vineyards a short drive out.

Which venues should you look at?

Boar’s Head Resort

Owned by the University of Virginia Foundation, Boar’s Head is a country resort on Ednam Drive built around a 19th-century gristmill moved to the site. It has meeting rooms, outdoor event spaces, golf, a spa and a racquet club, which makes it a standard choice for multi-day retreats.

For photos: lakeside lawns and the timbered Mill Room give warm, rustic frames between sessions.

Keswick Hall

Keswick Hall began as Villa Crawford, an Italianate country house built in 1912, and reopened in 2021 after a ground-up renovation. It sits in the hills east of Charlottesville beside the Pete Dye-designed Full Cry golf course and hosts corporate gatherings and meetings.

For photos: mountain views, terraces and a classic villa facade make the outdoors as much a backdrop as the rooms.

Kimpton The Forum Hotel

The Forum opened in 2023 on the grounds of UVA’s Darden School of Business, Kimpton’s first on-campus hotel, in a Jeffersonian-style building. Its meeting rooms and lecture hall serve executive education, conferences and receptions.

For photos: clean, new interiors and a real lecture hall make speaker and audience coverage straightforward.

Omni Charlottesville Hotel

The Omni stands at the west end of the Downtown Mall, the brick pedestrian street lined with shops and restaurants. Its Jefferson Ballroom and meeting rooms host association conferences and academic meetings in the heart of town.

For photos: ballroom coverage is routine; the Downtown Mall next door adds street-life frames for evening events.

The Clifton

The Clifton’s main house was built in 1799 by Thomas Mann Randolph, Jefferson’s son-in-law, on a ridge above the Rivanna River just east of town. Now a boutique inn with a lake and gardens, it hosts meetings, small retreats and private dinners.

For photos: historic rooms, gardens and a lakeside dock suit intimate dinners and small-group portraits.

The Paramount Theater

The Paramount opened in 1931 as a Rapp & Rapp movie palace on Main Street and reopened as a restored nonprofit theater on the Downtown Mall. Beyond its shows, it hosts private events and talks under its vintage marquee.

For photos: a lit marquee and restored auditorium give big, colorful stage and arrival frames.

Monticello (Private Events)

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation rents spaces around Jefferson’s home for corporate events, including Montalto, the mountain across from Monticello, plus the Jefferson Library, the visitor center and Jefferson Vineyards. Private, non-educational events are not held on the West Lawn or the mountaintop itself.

For photos: montalto’s long views over the Piedmont make wide, scenic frames the highlight.

Veritas Vineyard & Winery

Veritas sits at the foot of the Blue Ridge in Afton, on the Monticello Wine Trail, about half an hour west of Charlottesville. It has indoor and outdoor spaces for private events, corporate meetings and team outings, plus The Farmhouse inn and dining room on the estate.

For photos: vineyard rows against the mountains give open, natural-light frames, best near sunset.

How do you plan the photos?

Picked the room? Next comes the plan. What event photography costs has the rates, and the event shot list helps you decide what matters most. For an association, see annual meeting photography; for a company, corporate event photography. Evening events have their own page for gala photography. With everyone in one place, it’s also a good day for team portraits. If you’re bringing a team from DC, how to book an event photographer walks through the steps.
