Planning an event in Gaithersburg?
Gaithersburg sits along I-270’s tech and life-science corridor, home to NIST and a long list of federal contractors. Its venues mix lakeside hotel ballrooms at Washingtonian Center with a historic mansion in Kentlands and a farm built for company picnics.
Which venues should you look at?
Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center
The Marriott overlooks the lake at Washingtonian Center, a lively shopping and dining district off I-270. Its Lakeside Ballroom has floor-to-ceiling windows and a private terrace over the water, alongside the larger Washingtonian Ballroom.
For photos: the lakeside room’s window wall gives soft daylight and a water view, a rare backdrop for a suburban hotel.
DoubleTree by Hilton Washington DC North/Gaithersburg
On Perry Parkway near I-270, this hotel reopened after a $20 million renovation completed in 2021. It has two ballrooms and a large pre-function space with floor-to-ceiling windows, a common choice for corridor companies’ trainings and dinners.
For photos: window-lined pre-function space is good for natural-light networking shots before the ballroom program.
Holiday Inn Gaithersburg
On Montgomery Village Avenue just off I-270, this Holiday Inn has a Grand Ballroom, several meeting rooms and a courtyard tent for seasonal events. It is a practical, centrally placed option for regional meetings and banquets.
For photos: standard ballroom light; the courtyard tent adds an outdoor option in good weather.
Kentlands Mansion
Built around 1900 by the Tschiffely family and renamed The Kentlands after Otis Beall Kent bought it in 1942, this brick mansion now belongs to the City of Gaithersburg. It anchors the Kentlands neighborhood and rents for receptions, social functions and business meetings.
For photos: period rooms and the lawn give elegant, small-scale frames; ideal for receptions and leadership portraits.
Smokey Glen Farm
Smokey Glen began in 1953 as a barbecue concession at the University of Maryland stadium, and the family bought this Gaithersburg farm in 1958. Its 91 acres hold five private areas and host around 300 team-building days and company picnics a year.
For photos: wide open fields and pavilions; the scale makes great overhead and crowd shots.
Montgomery County Agricultural Center
Home of the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair since 1949, the largest county fair in Maryland, the Ag Center rents its buildings and grounds year round for shows, sales and private events.
For photos: large barn-style halls and outdoor grounds, made for expos and big-crowd events.
How do you plan the photos?
A good venue makes good pictures easier. If you’re comparing quotes, start with event photography rates and how many hours of coverage you really need. Then see the work: conference photography, corporate events and charity gala photography. If the whole team is in one place, it’s a good day for corporate portraits. Closer to DC, DC-area venues that photograph well has more ideas.
