Planning an event in Downtown DC?

Downtown and Penn Quarter hold the city’s biggest event machinery: the convention center, the largest hotels, and grand federal-era halls along Pennsylvania Avenue. This is where national conferences, inaugural balls and black-tie galas cluster, all within a few Metro stops of the White House.

Which venues should you look at?

Walter E. Washington Convention Center

DC’s main convention center, run by Events DC, filling several city blocks in Mount Vernon Square. Its ballroom is the largest in the city at 52,000 square feet, and it hosts the biggest conferences and trade shows that come to Washington.

For photos: huge halls and a vast ballroom, with room for every kind of frame.

Marriott Marquis Washington, DC

Completed in 2014, it is the city’s largest hotel and the only one connected directly to the convention center. Marriott lists about 100,000 square feet of event space and a main ballroom of 30,600 square feet.

For photos: modern atrium and big ballrooms give clean, bright spaces for general sessions and sponsor moments.

National Building Museum

Built in the 1880s as the Pension Bureau, it is famous for its Great Hall, a vast indoor court lined with giant Corinthian columns. The hall has hosted inaugural balls and some of the city’s largest galas.

For photos: the Great Hall is enormous and photogenic from the upper arcades; bring light for the floor and frame wides from above.

Willard InterContinental Washington

A historic hotel two blocks from the White House, where the Willard brothers’ hotel has stood since the 1850s. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, and Historic Hotels of America notes it has hosted every president since the 1850s.

For photos: gilded ballrooms and Peacock Alley give a classic, formal look for galas and dinners.

Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium

A neoclassical hall in Federal Triangle that opened in 1935 as the Departmental Auditorium. The North Atlantic Treaty was signed here in 1949, and today it hosts galas, award ceremonies and summits under its tall columns and chandeliers.

For photos: columns, coffered ceiling and chandeliers make every wide look formal.

The two museums share the historic Old Patent Office Building in Penn Quarter. Its enclosed Kogod Courtyard, under a glass and steel canopy, is one of the city’s best-known evening event spaces for galas and receptions.

For photos: glass canopy and stone walls give soft, even light by day and a dramatic look at night.

Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center

A federal building on Pennsylvania Avenue that doubles as one of DC’s largest event venues. Its glass-roofed atrium and pavilion host conferences, trade events and big receptions near the White House.

For photos: the atrium is bright and modern; elevated balconies help with crowd wides.

Grand Hyatt Washington

A large hotel on H Street connected to the Metro Center station. It offers 39 meeting rooms and about 42,000 square feet of space around a soaring atrium lobby.

For photos: the multi-story atrium gives a big, airy backdrop; standard ballrooms for sessions.

JW Marriott Washington, DC

The original JW Marriott, on Pennsylvania Avenue two blocks from the White House. It has more than 40,000 square feet of meeting space, a Grand Ballroom for about 1,500 and a terrace over Pennsylvania Avenue.

For photos: the Pennsylvania Avenue Terrace gives a recognizable DC view for receptions and group shots.

National Press Club

The journalists’ club at the top of the National Press Building on 14th Street, founded in 1908. Its ballroom and rooms host press conferences, newsmaker luncheons, panels and association dinners.

For photos: classic ballroom and podium setups; good for speaker coverage with a recognizable backdrop.

How do you plan the photos?

Picked the room? Next comes the plan. What event photography costs has the rates, and the event shot list helps you decide what matters most. For an association, see annual meeting photography; for a company, corporate event photography. Evening events have their own page for gala photography. With everyone in one place, it’s also a good day for team portraits. In the city, see DC-area venues that photograph well, and for advocacy days, Hill Day photography.

What else is nearby?
