Planning an event in Capitol Hill?
Capitol Hill is where advocacy days, Hill receptions and policy conferences happen, steps from the Capitol and Union Station. Venues range from big hotels on New Jersey Avenue to a Shakespeare library, a postal museum and a 19th-century market hall.
Which venues should you look at?
Washington Union Station
Daniel Burnham’s grand rail station opened in the early 1900s as a gateway to the capital. Its restored Main Hall, under a 96-foot barrel-vaulted ceiling, hosts inaugural balls and citywide galas.
For photos: the Main Hall’s gold coffered ceiling and arches make spectacular wides; it is a huge, echoing space.
Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill
About two blocks from the Capitol on New Jersey Avenue, with roughly 38,000 square feet of meeting space. Hyatt says its Regency Ballroom is the largest on Capitol Hill, and a full renovation wrapped up in late 2025.
For photos: large ballroom plus views toward the Capitol grounds from some spaces.
Kimpton George Hotel
A boutique hotel on E Street steps from Union Station and the Capitol. Its four meeting and banquet rooms, with catering from Bistro Bis, suit quick-turn Hill meetings and receptions.
For photos: small, stylish rooms; good for intimate meetings and close-up coverage.
Folger Shakespeare Library
Home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection, one block from the Capitol. It reopened in June 2024 after an $80.5 million renovation with new galleries and meeting spaces, and it accepts space rental requests.
For photos: art deco exterior and wood-paneled interiors give a scholarly, warm look.
Smithsonian National Postal Museum
Inside the old City Post Office next to Union Station. Its 90-foot atrium, with a vintage rail car, mail trucks and three airmail planes hanging overhead, hosts corporate and nonprofit receptions after hours.
For photos: planes overhead and a tall atrium make memorable wides; windows glow at dusk.
Eastern Market North Hall
The rentable hall of Eastern Market, the 19th-century public market on 7th Street SE. About 4,000 square feet with vaulted ceilings and arched windows, plus an outdoor plaza.
For photos: arched windows bring good daylight; brick and beams add neighborhood character.
How do you plan the photos?
A good venue makes good pictures easier. If you’re comparing quotes, start with event photography rates and how many hours of coverage you really need. Then see the work: conference photography, corporate events and charity gala photography. If the whole team is in one place, it’s a good day for corporate portraits. In the city, see DC-area venues that photograph well, and for advocacy days, Hill Day photography.
What else is nearby?
Event venues nearby: Downtown DC, the Wharf and Navy Yard, Dupont Circle and Embassy Row. For event photography in Capitol Hill and nearby, see event photographer in Washington, DC.
